What do you say when your students ask, "What is Sociology"? Let this video help. Leading sociologists like Anthony Giddens explain and illustrate what it means to adopt a ‘sociological approach’ and students talk about studying sociology.
Ideal for Open Days and for students just starting sociology.

1: What is Sociology?
Presenter Jennifer Vaal tells us that the starting place for sociology is not the library, but out here in the everyday world. We look at the questions sociologists ask, the areas they study and illustrate how so many of the things we take for granted are socially constructed.

2: The Student Experience
Students talk about what it’s like studying sociology - the importance of discussion, outside visits and doing research projects - and how it has changed the way they look at themselves and the world.

3: Thinking Sociologically
The final part looks at how thinking like a sociologist gives a very different take on everyday things like the mobile phone and security cameras. Students talk about the transferable skills they have acquired and how they intend using them.
